What are the Current Public Health Recommendations for Vitamin B5?

Pantothenic acid or vitamin B5 is a vitamin belonging to the B-vitamin family. Vitamin B5 is is a water-soluble vitamin which means, it dissolves in water and gets stored only to required amount and excess amount of this vitamin is secreted through urine. So, you have to include this vitamin in your daily diet so that you get enough vitamin of it. The function of this vitamin is it helps the body in proper functioning of nervous system and muscles.

According to the institute of medicine, National Academy of Sciences, the recommended dietary allowance(RDA) for this vitamin was set in 1998. Below is the list which shows how much amount of this vitamin a toddler or an adult requires daily.

  • From 0 to 6 months: 1.7 milligrams.
  • From 6 to12 months: 1.8 milligrams.
  • From 1 to 3 years: 2 milligrams.
  • From 4 to 8 years: 3 milligrams.
  • For boys between 9 to 13 years: 4 milligrams.
  • For males between 14 years and older: 5 milligrams.
  • For girls between 9 to 13 years: 4 milligrams.
  • For females between 14 years and older: 5 milligrams.
  • For Pregnant females of any age: 6 milligrams.
  • For Lactating females of any age: 7 milligrams.
  • However, deficiency of pantothenic acid is so rare because it is found in most foods including plants and animals. But an average requirement or daily intake for adults is four to seven milligrams.
