What are the Current Public Health Recommendations for Vitamin B6?

Vitamin B6 is also known as pyridoxine. It helps the body in proper functioning of nervous system and produces red blood cells.

According to the institute of medicine at the National Academy of Sciences in the United States, the recommended dietary allowance(RDA) for vitamin B6 was set in 2000. Below is the list which depicts how much amount of this vitamin B6 for infants or an adult requires daily.

Infants:

  • From newborns to 6 months: 0.1 milligrams(mg) per day.
  • From 7 to12 months: 0.3 milligrams per day.

Children:

  • From 1 to 3 years: 0.5 milligrams per day.
  • From 4 to 8 years: 0.6 milligrams per day.

Boys:

  • For boys between 9 to 13 years: 1.0 milligrams per day.
  • For boys between 14 to 18 years:1.3 milligrams per day.

Girls:

  • For girls between 9 to 13 years:1.0 milligrams per day.
  • For females between 14 to 18 years:1.2 milligrams per day.

Adults:
Males:

  • For males between 19 to 50 years:1.3 milligrams per day.
  • For males above 50 years: 1.7 milligrams per day.

Females:

  • For females 19 to 50 years:1.3 milligrams per day.
  • For females above 50 years of age: 1.5 milligrams per day.
  • For Pregnant females of any age:1.9 milligrams per day.
  • For breast feeding women of any age:2.0 milligrams per day.

The above details mentioned are minimum requirement for a person per day. But, the amount of intake of this vitamin depends on the person’s age, gender and his/her conditions such as illnesses or pregnancy.
